C-6 Corvette base or Z-06

Ok..between these two cars which one would have lower maintenance costs, less trouble, more durable, the GT-500 has 5 mph bumpers, corvette is 2.5 mph bumpers. Which car is easier to live with? Which car will last longer in years?

The Corvette has a suspension that will cost more to align since both front and back have to be done whereas the GT-500 is a live-rear axle which is probably a more durable suspension and the front only needs alignment. :shift::rockon:

my dad works for chevy. Ownership can be very expensive especially out of warranty.

Roger

I agree as with the Corvette everything is computerized or has sensors. But I expect the same thing with the GT-500. As with the Corvette either model base or Z-06 I would think an extended warranty is a must. Both GT-500 and Corvette has expensive tires to replace. I just wonder which car will outlast the other. I also have an 88 5.0 in excellent shape with 207,000+ miles on it and tuning it up changing spark plugs, oil minor do-it-yourself things are easy and lots of aftermarket parts availavailable if you are into modifying your car.

:rant: : :do what: :do what:

C'mon! Smile! :happy feet:

Seriously, in looking at the pros and cons of both cars (and their longevity vs cost) here's something to consider:

Corvette- Significantly more bells and whistles. I had an '03 coupe that had all the onboard diags stuff like tire pressure sensors, etc. There was always something triggering a lite, whether it was because of a cold morning dropping my PSI a couple of pounds or my windshield washer fluid was sloshing in a turn. Factor in other toys like HUD and now you're into reallllly big dough if it goes belly up. OTOH, from an engine standpoint a regular 'Vette has no blower (like the GT500) or it's associated belts, hoses, fluids, etc. The 'Vette motor is the same basic motor that's been in the things for years. I can't give an educated opinion on a Z06...but they cost a friggin' fortune. If you decide to get one, PM me and I can share a code with you for their preferred pricing (a little less than invoice). Oh, and the IRS will be more to work on and/or replace vs a solid on the Mustang.

GT500- Less bells and whistles. Only avail with manual trans...so theoretically simpler than the 'Vette if you chose the auto with paddles. Solid axle. The block as been around a while but the top end hasn't. Then, consider the blower. More stuff to go wrong....not including the extra stuff should you decide to changes pullies, go with cat-backs, CAI, etc. Overall, electronically a simpler car than the 'Vette. Mechanically? About a heads up IMO.

Well I will keep my 2005 C-6 and have the GT-500 as a daily driver as it has a more durable suspension especially on these bad roads here but the ride on the solid axle will be pretty bumpy compared to the base Corvette IRS which is a luxury car ride with F-55 suspension. Then again Z-06 Corvette only comes one way also no passenger power seat to save weight but it still has the HUD and some other stuff that can go wrong. It's light 1,000 lbs. less than the GT-500 and you won't get hit with that gas guzzler tax.

Yup...the GT500 needs a low-fat diet, but that's not happening. However, what you DO get is room for two passengers in a rear seat. The 768pound difference between the Z06 and the GT500 is certainly partially in part due to the block materials. Factor in the extra cooling (liquids and containers) on the GT500 and it's a little beefy.

I'm a little surprised that with a higher final drive ratio that the GT500 can't squeek past the GG Tax, but it's very highly unlikely that it will. I've been told a couple of times that it's a given...now it's just how much?

The GT500 sports a .63 (6th) and 3.31 final versus the Z06's .50 (6th) and 3.42 final.

I had the "performance" ratio in my C5 and got great results. I'm sure the GT500 won't come close.

Maybe the Dodge Challenger coming out is a better comparison.

I have 3:15 in the 4spd. auto and the 5.0 has 3.55 5spd. and is a very durable car.

The one thing the Corvette always had going for it was less weight, better suspension, and better weight distribution nearly 50/50.

Is this gas guzzler tax a one time fee at purchase time?

Your absolutely right about the extended warranty. A headlight will cost you close to 1k as they have to be bought in sets etc. My dads c-5 always has the tire pressure sensors going off. They have a great motor and suspension although I do think the vette suspension is a lot more "harsh" compared to what the gt500 will be but that remains to be seen. I just don't like the look of them and the z-06 is way out of my price range. Just had a member of mine pick one up for 72k. Don't make enough for that yet. Oh well. Wish I could have both. As it is I will probably have to sell my mach to afford one.

:happy feet: Me too I would love to have both Z-06 and GT-500 but for now I will stick with the 2005 C-6 and the 88 5.0 GT I have. I would think that the Shelby will be alot rougher riding than the Corvette because of that live axle which is alot cheaper to maintain than the IRS on the Corvette. :shift:

Anything with the word Corvette on it will cost you an arm and an leg. The low beams per manual must be changed by Chevy dealership. Car is completely computerized and does everything for you. Very comfortable riding too.
